How to choose an alternate airport for Aspen

Eagle, Rifle, Grand Junction, and Denver compared for a private Aspen transfer: the one-way rates, what each airport is for, and how to book the right one.

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is the closest commercial field to town. It is not the only airport people use. Weather, schedules, and aircraft type send travelers to Eagle, Rifle, Grand Junction, or Denver instead. The useful question is not which airport is famous. It is which airport your ticket or your airplane is actually using, and what the private transfer costs from there.

Aspen Alpenglow Limousine publishes one-way rates, each way: Eagle $720, Denver $1,375, Grand Junction $950, and Rifle $720. Holiday pricing may change seasonally. A confirmed reservation is honored at the quoted rate. Those four numbers are the decision, along with where you are landing. The airport transfers page is the booking overview for all of them.

Eagle, when the ticket says EGE

Eagle County Regional Airport sits up the valley toward Vail. One-way Aspen to Eagle is $720. Eagle to Aspen is $720. The price does not flip depending on which end of the day you are traveling. Families use Eagle when the Aspen flight they wanted is full or when the schedule into EGE simply fits better.

Book it as an Eagle transfer, not as a Vail day trip with an airport tossed in, unless you actually need stops in the Vail Valley. The Eagle / Vail service area page covers that corridor, including Eagle County Regional Airport. Say whether you are on an airline or a private aircraft. Private FBO airport service includes Eagle, along with Rifle, Grand Junction, Buena Vista, Montrose, and Gunnison.

Rifle, when the plane is small or the fare is the one that worked

Rifle Garfield County Airport is the closer western option for a lot of private aircraft and for some airline itineraries that do not use ASE. The one-way rate is $720 each way, the same published figure as Eagle. The geography is not the same. Rifle is down-valley, west of Glenwood Springs, so the ride is a valley drive rather than a climb over to the Vail side.

Use the Rifle service area page if you want the local picture, and put KRIL or Rifle on the reservation so the driver goes to the right field. Do not assume a Rifle landing is covered by the Eagle rate just because both numbers happen to be $720. Name the airport.

Grand Junction, when the Western Slope is the arrival

Grand Junction Regional Airport is the larger field west of the mountains. The one-way rate is $950 each way. People end up there when a connection is simpler through the Western Slope, when a diversion puts them on the ground in Grand Junction, or when a private airplane is using that airport or its FBO.

The Grand Junction service area page is the one to read before you assume the pickup is a short hop. It is a real drive, and it has its own rate. Flight diversions to Grand Junction, like diversions to Denver, are handled with 2 hours' notice and no Aspen cancellation penalty. That rule is for a diversion. It is not a discount and it is not the ordinary cancellation policy.

Denver, when the hub is the point

Denver International Airport is the hub. The one-way rate is $1,375 each way. Choose Denver when the international connection, the airline you already fly, or a Front Range appointment makes DEN the airport you are actually using. Do not choose it only because it is familiar if Eagle or Rifle would put you closer. You pay the Denver rate for the Denver drive.

The Denver service area page sits with the other area pages. A later note in this series walks through the winter route itself. For choosing the airport, the fact you need is the rate and the direction: each way means Aspen to Denver is $1,375 and Denver to Aspen is $1,375.

Flight diversions to Denver are handled with 2 hours' notice and no Aspen cancellation penalty. If you booked Aspen and the airline lands you in Denver, call. If you booked Denver on purpose, you do not need the diversion rule. You need the Denver reservation.

How to pick, without inventing a winner

Start with the airport on the ticket or the flight plan. Then look at the rate. Eagle and Rifle are both $720 each way. Grand Junction is $950. Denver is $1,375. Holiday pricing may change seasonally, so a holiday week can be quoted differently from a quiet Tuesday. Get the quote for your dates.

Airport pickups include flight tracking and thirty minutes of complimentary wait time. That applies whether the field is small or large. Tell the company the flight number, the headcount, and whether children need seats. Child car seats and boosters are free. SUVs seat 7. The Ford Transit Ford Transit Passenger Van seats 13. No shared rides are offered.

General cancellations need 24 hours' notice. Keep that separate from the 2-hour diversion rule for Denver and Grand Junction.

Private airplanes are not an afterthought. If you are using an FBO at Eagle, Rifle, Grand Junction, Buena Vista, Montrose, or Gunnison, say so. The meet point at an FBO is not the airline arrivals door.

Call 970-456-3666 when the itinerary is still a maybe. It is easier to match a driver to the right airport before the tickets are locked than to rebuild the day from baggage claim.
